Our Church History

Greetings, Dear Christian friends! We’d like to take a brief moment to introduce you to our church and share with you how Orlando Bible Fellowship got its start, where we are and where we are heading.

Pastor Willie Burrell Jr. is our founding Pastor. He is a native of Dallas, Texas who trusted Christ as his personal Savior on September 28, 1975 in Great Falls, Montana, while on active duty in the United States Air Force. So inspired by His new faith in Christ, Pastor Burrell felt compelled to pursue formal training in the study of God’s Word, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) from Denver Baptist Bible College in 1982 and a Master in Theology Degree (ThM) from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1988.

With a strong desire to evangelize the lost and educate saints in a deeper knowledge of the Word of God, Pastor Burrell, went on to serve six years as a professor at the Southern Bible Institute in Dallas, Texas. He also served as the Minister of Christian Education and Youth Pastor at our mother church, Forest Hill Community Bible Church. He was instrumental in providing the foundation of Christian living and service in the lives of young men and women who would grow to be successful leaders in their communities.

In 1993, Pastor Burrell, began to feel the tug of the Lord to move to other fields of ministry and in the next year, he was approached by Dr. Rubin, S. Conner, Founder and President of Urban Evangelical Mission (U.E.M.), formerly known as Black Evangelistic Enterprise (B.E.E.). Dr. Conner asked Pastor Burrell to prayerfully consider planting a new church in Orlando, Florida. Along with his family, Pastor Burrell joined the U.E.M. team and relocated to Orlando, in late December 1994 where they started Orlando Bible Fellowship.

The first Bible study was held in the Burrell’s home, in March of 1995. In attendance were the three core families who became co-founders and the first members of Orlando Bible Fellowship; the families of James and Dianne Graves, Bruce and Charla Handley, and Charles and Jerrie Magruder.

Shortly thereafter we began meeting at the Holiday Inn on 1792, then later moved to a small store front in the South Chase area, where reached out to new families, consistently preaching and teaching the word of God. After several months the Lord moved us to a downtown location on Colonial and Magnolia, where God moved in and blessed the lives of each and every member and where we saw more souls come to a saving faith of Jesus Christ. After being there for three years we begin meeting from house to house. The Lord finally opened a door for us to meet in the conference rooms here at Regal Mariner, a Christian owned business where Pastor Burrell serves as a Chaplain, with Marketplace Ministries (MPM).

With each move from place to place throughout the city, the Lord has blessed our Evangelistic efforts and we have experienced more and more growth. Families have joined, served and in some cases moved on to other locations abroad but one thing that has remained constant is our committed to the vision of Sharing the Joy of God’s Love through the Dynamic of His W.O.R.D. (WORSHIP, OUTREACH, RELATIONSHIPS and DISCIPLESHIP). Inspired by God’s love, we are dedicated to share the gospel of Christ with this lost world and we’ve seen lives changed and souls won as we continue the path God has led us on.

Orlando Bible Fellowship has been blessed with a multi-ethnic ministry representing the demography of Orlando. Our goal has always been to reach the world for Christ and in 1995, we were given the opportunity to reach out by television and later by way of radio, (WHIM) 1520 AM, each Sunday at 1:00 p.m. We have made it a priority to support and serve with missionaries from abroad. Each year, we seek to teach the body about Missions, inviting Missionaries to share their ministry experience and needs with us. We’ve had missionaries from as far away as Africa, South America and Bolivia come and fellowship. Pastor Burrell has personally attended three short term Mission trips to 5 rural villages in the mountains of Guatemala, two trips to Mendoza, Argentina, in South America and is presently preparing for a mission trip with Brother Charles Magruder to Togo, West Africa.

Our youth are also greatly encouraged to share their faith and grow in their knowledge of God. They have attended several trips to Washington D.C. for Youth Conferences with Campus Crusade, and recently returned from Atlanta Georgia after attending Impact’s Ninth National Conference “Mission Possible”. This year, we plan to continue our outreach ministry to Orlando through various programs, door to door visitation, and lifestyle evangelism. We are very grateful to the Lord, for the many churches that have supported us and helped us touch the lives of so many in Orlando and abroad. We ask you to continue to join with us in praying for the ongoing needs of this church and that we continue to more effectively reach Orlando to have a greater impact in the lives of families here. When you attend Orlando Bible Fellowship you will experience a family rich in relationships and strong in ministry and service. As we previously mentioned we are dedicated to Worship, Outreach, Relationships and Discipleship and our ministry is designed to strongly exhibit each of these. Our Sunday Morning Services consist of a contemporary style of Praise and Worship where we honor and Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. We lead in the worship of God through music, prayer, giving and preaching of the Word. Our Education and Discipleship Ministry is a strong priority because we believe that each person who has received Christ as Savior should have the opportunity to learn about Him and know the role He plays in their day-to-day lives. This is central to our ministry and we have put in place Sunday Morning and Wednesday Evening Bible Studies that focus on Christian growth through biblical knowledge and practical obedience. We also have a commitment to building strong relationships. We believe Christians should be encouraged by one another, and we promote opportunities to build these lasting relationships, with our Men’s and Women’s Fellowship ministries. We presently have a monthly fellowship breakfast for both Men and Women, and fellowship days for friends and family. Lastly, we are dedicated to Missions, Evangelism and Outreach. Our goal is to share our faith within the context of our environment and seize greater opportunities that the Lord reveals. We have a five-fold evangelistic program you can take part in: Correspondence (Writing), Contact (Home Visitation), Communication (Telephone) and Special Events and Foreign Missions. All-in-all our mission is to introduce people to Christ, to encourage them to live abundantly by faith, building new relationships in Christ and sharing what they believe with others. Our ultimate commitment in this ministry is that all will grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and that working with others, they will make a difference in their community, city, state, and ultimately the world which will bring glory to God.
